Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Preview – How Cait Sith’s Combat Works

In Final Fantasy VII Remake, players got the chance to fully explore Cloud, Barrett, Tifa, and Aerith's moves during their extended stay in Midgar. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth adds several new playable party members. While we've already covered how one of those new playable characters, Red XIII, controls (read more here), this time, we're talking about another playable party member: Kat. Sith.

The cat creature joins the party during Final Fantasy VII Rebirth after a brief cameo in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Like Red XIII, he became a playable character for the first time in the Remake Trilogy in Rebirth. As the team began to fit the underappreciated character into the gameplay of the Remake Trilogy and especially Rebirth, they looked towards the original Final Fantasy VII mechanics of the Cats Sith.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi explains, “For Cat Sith, we wanted to retain really fun elements from the original, like the dice attacks and the luck component in her fighting game; this is also shown in Rebirth.” sports informer, “Of course, given its very handsome appearance, it will have a more quirky and extravagant fighting style as opposed to Cloud's more conservative fighting style.”

Battle director Teruki Ando agreed with Hamaguchi's desire to rely heavily on the core elements prevalent in the Kait Sith genre. “It's really based on looking at and analyzing what's at the core of these characters,” Ando says. “For the Cat Sith, these are luck-based abilities; we really wanted to express these in Rebirth. Starting from there, we would build upon it with commands and actions that we felt were appropriate for this character .It's just not the case [new additions like] Kat Sith or Red XIII, but similar games for other characters like Cloud or Barret. By seeing what fighting style or combat experience players think about or imagine when playing as Claude or Barrett, and then analyzing it on a more micro level we can express it as we would in Rebirth. Are.

Cat Sith begins battle as a singular character, with the option to attack, perform a special ability called Kitty Wallop, or use luck-based commands such as Lucky Roll. However, the main differentiating factor for Cait the Sith's fighting style lies in her ability to summon a support character for help and, in the process, completely change her combat mechanics.

“By calling Mogul into battle, the Cat Sith's fighting style will change,” says Hamaguchi. “You can jump and control Kite on its own. In that case, the Moogle is just an AI character that fights on its own. When the HP ends up at zero, it disappears, but you can You can call it again to display it again. There are attacks that you can only do when you are alone and not on the mogul, but there are also some attacks that you can only do when you Get on board.”

During a hands-off demo showing a side mission (read more here), Hamaguchi, who is giving the demo, shows off the Moogle Mine, an ability that Moogle can use on the battlefield. This ability spreads mines across the Mogul's radius, causing damage to any enemy who comes close enough to the enemy. Although I wasn't the one controlling the action, it still seemed like a pretty impressive moveI From Kat Sith and Muggle.

Red XIII also joins Rebirth as a new playable character, bringing a more unique fighting style

Like all party-character pairings, the Cat Sith has abilities that synergize with every other character in the party. Sadly, I only got to see one of the Cat Sith's synergy abilities, but if this is any indication, we're in for some fun interactions with other characters in the party. Hamaguchi activates the synergy ability between Cloud and Cat Sith. The result is one of the most powerful attacks seen in the Final Fantasy Remake Trilogy so far. Kat Sith summons a moogle, who grabs Cloud's buster sword while Cloud rides on his back. Even though Hamaguchi talks about the comparison between Cloud's more conservative style and the Cat Sith's over-the-top, extravagant style, their combination in this Synergy Ability feels completely wild and silly, as well as natural and appropriate.

I can't wait to play more of Cait Sith and learn how he interacts with other characters when Final Fantasy VII Rebirth comes to PlayStation 5 on February 29th. For more on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, be sure to check out our exclusive coverage hub. By visiting the banner below!
