Gautam Gambhir appointed head coach of Team India | Cricket News

New Delhi: Former opener Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the Team India Head coach confirmation BCCI Secretary jay shah on Tuesday.
He will replace Rahul Dravid in this role and will face the challenge of maintaining the team's momentum after the recent victory in the T20 World Cup.
Gambhir's first assignment as the head coach of the Indian team will be the upcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka. Team India is set to play 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is starting July 27.
Dravid has resigned from the post of head coach of the Indian team. His decision came after India's victorious performance in the T20 World Cup held in America and the Caribbean Islands last month.
The former Indian cricketer's tenure as the coach of the side ended on a high, with the team clinching the coveted T20 World Cup title.
Shah took to social media platform X to make the formal announcement.
“It gives me immense pleasure to welcome Gautam Gambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Cricket has evolved rapidly in modern times and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape closely,” Shah wrote on Twitter.
Shah said, “Having worked hard and excelled in various roles during his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to take Indian cricket forward. His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience makes him perfectly positioned to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. @BCCI fully supports him on this new journey.”

The BCCI also welcomed Gambhir for his role in Team India.
“The former Indian opener brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the game. Known for his exceptional batting and strategic skills, Gambhir has been a key figure in Indian cricket,” the BCCI said in a statement issued to the media.
The Board further said, “The Board also congratulates Mr. Paras Mhambrey (Bowling Coach), Mr. T. Dilip (Fielding Coach) and Mr. Vikram Rathore (Batting Coach) for their highly successful tenures. The BCCI appreciates their contributions and wishes them all the best for the future.”
The BCCI also expressed its heartfelt gratitude to Dravid for his outstanding service as head coach.
“Dravid's tenure has been filled with significant achievements; the most notable being becoming the champions of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, 2024. Team India was also the runner-up in the ICC 50-over World Cup in 2023 held in India and the ICC World Test Championship in 2023 held in England.
Apart from the team's dominance in bilateral series at home, Dravid's dedication towards nurturing young talent and instilling discipline and sportsmanship in the team has been exemplary.”

Gambhir's main objective once he takes charge will be to ensure that the Indian team continues to perform at the highest level. He will have to work closely with the players and support staff to identify areas of improvement and devise strategies to address any weaknesses.
There are a lot of expectations from Gambhir due to India's status as one of the top cricketing nations in the world. However, with his vast experience as a player and deep understanding of the game, he is well equipped to handle the pressure and lead the team to further success.
Gambhir, a skilled left-handed batsman who played a key role in India's 2011 ODI World Cup triumph, recently led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title as their mentor.
Known for his serious nature, Gambhir ventured into commentating and later entered politics, serving as an MLA for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In March, he resigned from politics to join KKR in the IPL, a team he had captained twice in 2012 and 2014.
As Gambhir takes over the captaincy of the Indian team, there are a lot of expectations from him as his victory in the T20 World Cup is his fourth World Cup title and first major trophy since the 2013 Champions Trophy.
“The Board would like to thank the former head coach“Congratulations to Mr Rahul Dravid on his stellar performance with the team. Team India now embarks on a new journey under a new coach – Mr Gautam Gambhir,” BCCI president Roger Binny said in a statement.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik, on Tuesday unanimously recommended Gambhir, the board said.
“His appointment as head coach marks a new chapter for Indian cricket. His experience, dedication and vision for the game make him the ideal candidate to lead our team forward.”
Binny said, “We are confident that under his leadership Team India will perform well and make the country proud.”
“It has been an honour for me to serve my tricolour, my people and my country,” Gambhir said in a BCCI statement.
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Rahul Dravid and his support staff for their stellar performance with the team. I am honoured and excited to take up the role of Head Coach of Team India.”
He said, “During my playing days, I always felt proud to wear the Indian jersey and there will be no difference when I take up this new role.”
“I look forward to working closely with the BCCI, Head of Cricket Mr VVS Laxman, the support staff and most importantly the players as we work towards achieving success in the upcoming tournaments,” Gambhir added.
